1928: Sybil McLaughlin was born in the Cayman Islands.
1991: She was elected to the post as first ever Speaker after MLAs voted in 1990 to create the position of Speaker to replace the Governor as president of the LA .
1991 - 1996: Mrs McLaughlin remained in the post of Speaker.
1959 - 1984: Mrs McLaughlin’s position changed as Clerk of the LA, As Clerk of the LA she travelled and worked in the parliaments of other Commonwealth jurisdictions, such as the UK, Northern Ireland, Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago, which allowed her to build her expertise for her role here in Cayman.
1996: She was designated a National Hero for her contribution to the development of parliament in the Cayman Islands.
2015: Mrs McLaughlin’s daughter-in-law Heather McLaughlin documented her life in a biography titled From Island Girl to National Hero.
